ITG Consumer Signal Series

How AI Is Changing Consumer Behavior

AI is no longer an abstraction in people’s lives. It is getting baked into how people search, shop, plan, and make sense of everyday life. In the first of ITG’s Consumer Signal Series, our Creative Consumers® associates discussed their AI habits in detail, diving into trust, privacy, and the moments when humans are still a necessity.

Watch The Conversations

Podcast 1: AI, Trust, and the Human Line

In this conversation, Creative Consumers® associates Abu, Kara, and Derek unpack where AI is welcome and where it crosses a line: financial decisions, taxes, job searches, and the moments when they insist on a human voice and human customer service. They talk about using AI as an educational tool, drawing hard boundaries around personal health, and rejecting AI‑generated messages that pretend to speak as them.

Podcast 2: AI Uses, From Pets to Portfolios

Creative Consumers® associates Sunny, Shaneia, and Aaron take AI into the thick of everyday logistics: vet decisions, injuries, credit repair, big‑ticket furniture, and how AI helps them balance chores and leisure. They reveal where AI advice feels solid, where data sharing starts to feel risky, and how much relief they get when AI cuts down the mental load of cooking, travel, and family plans.

These episodes are a follow-up to a more in-depth consumer panel discussion with the same Creative Consumers® associates. The full recording is available exclusively to registered attendees, but it’s just one part of ITG’s broader Consumer Signal Series, where Creative Consumers® associates explore the trends, behaviors, and tensions shaping the future of consumer decision-making.

What We Heard From Consumers

AI is becoming the first stop.

Consumers are more commonly describing conversational AI as the place they go before traditional search, because it lets them ask in plain language, add context, and refine without opening multiple tabs.

Shopping is now a live conversation.

Buying a paddle, sectional, or protein drink becomes an iterative chat: broad prompts, constraints, comparisons, and a final “Gut check this choice for me.” Consumers expect tools that keep up with that back‑and‑forth rather than a static funnel.

AI is turning people into demanding optimizers.

Once it’s easy to compare options, consumers stop settling for “good enough” and start chasing the best price, fit, and features across brands, channels, and time. Loyalty has to be earned with specific, provable advantages, not just familiarity.

Personal context is where AI earns its keep.

AI feels most valuable when it remembers the dog, the family’s schedule, room dimensions, or travel patterns and uses that to give tailored advice on vets, furniture, and trips. Consumers reward that relevance when it clearly saves time and effort.

Trust has a domain ceiling.

The same people who happily use AI for travel points or meal planning draw skeptical lines when it comes to medical diagnoses, legal stakes, and deeply personal health information. They fear long‑term consequences from data that looks like “them,” even if they were just searching on behalf of a friend.

Consumers sometimes sanitize their own data.

Before typing anything sensitive, consumers frequently anonymize numbers, avoid account details, and keep descriptions generic, essentially building their own—however effective they actually are—privacy filters on top of AI tools.

AI should never speak as the consumer, and obvious AI marketing erodes trust.

They reject AI‑written wedding speeches, personal emails, and brand messages that pretend to be human, and they instinctively distrust ad copy and imagery that reads as AI‑generated. Transparent labeling of AI use may build more trust in the long run.
